*Looks at Euro exchange rate. Screams.*
I am suffering from suitcase dysmorphia. The suitcase in the shop looked thoroughly "medium". The suitcase under my bed is ginormous. The meter rule tells me that they are in fact the same size.

The small suitcase in the shop looks tiny. I buy it anyway because I don't need a third ginormous "medium" suitcase.

I wonder how big it will look when I get home? And will my clothes fit?

I want some Birkenstocks. They are terribly practical. Alas, they look completely ridiculous on my feet.

My mother is doing our packing (we're sharing one large suitcase and one small one). We've got books and shoes in, and are now wondering whether we'll actually be able to fit our clothes...

My mother never lets me put books in a suitcase for some reason, so they have to go in my 'handbag' (would be a carry-on, if I ever went on a plane). So unfair.

I often put them in my carry-on bag so the corners don't get bashed, but this time my carry-on bag is my laptop (because going on my own I want the option of doing a bit of writing on a rainy evening, not because I'm doing any work).

At least only going for a week, and being a physical wreck so that there is no point even thinking of serious hiking, means that I shouldn't fill more than half with boots and shoes...

Incidentally, has your mother any particular recommendations for Salzburg?

Everyone's feet look ridiculous in Birkenstocks. Choosing to wear them is an assertion of a particular intersection of moral and aesthetic values.
I love mine, but I never wear them out-of-doors...

This is true, and pithily expressed. I think that I need to consider them hard-wearing summer slippers I can wear in the garden, rather than shoes, which is exactly what I need.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Though mine have a pretty pink and green floral pattern on the uppers which distracts from the ridiculousness. They are so incredibly comfortable that I would wear them anyway though.

I tried on some ones with a floral pattern and they were lovely, but I have shallow feet, so they also fell off.

Even if you adjusted the buckle?

Sadly, yes. I'm going to see if I can find some of the two or three close-together buckles ones to see if they work.

Those are the kind I have and they work for my very wide feet. I don't know what that will mean for you.

For what it's worth, I'm always surprised by how much I'm able to cram into my 'small' suitcase, no matter how many times I've packed it before.

That being said, ask me again when I've actually packed it and my garment bag tomorrow. ;)

This is encouraging. The fact that my existing small suitcase is a weekend bag that really doesn't hold a lot may be influencing me.

Good luck with your packing!

I love my Birkenstocks, particularly my white 'Florida' pair (strangely enough). The somewhat dressier ones can go well with skirts, like the Granada or Bali pattern. I do have a pair of stocky black ones, but they look a bit sillier.

I love the idea of them. It's just that when I looked in the mirror I appeared to be wearing giant leather cages on my rather shallow and boney feet.

*damn exchange rate*
I miss the old pretty coins & bills. I've saved some as Artifacts From a Friendlier Time.

I always pack too much and despise how I seem to need to take several pairs of shoes. And then I don't have room for things I buy - leave room for things you'll buy! Toiletries also mount up and I couldn't figure it out until I realized that I don't usually carry all that stuff around with me because it lives in my house.

Maybe you can rent a turtle to carry your stuff in HIS house. Although you might have to carry him as well.

Man, that would be an interesting children's story...The Turtle Who Rented His House. *makes mental note to get on with writing already*

Not to digress of course! There's a camping store in our area that sells collapsible, expandable bags to fit inside luggage that are supposed to squeeze the life out of your clothes and yet not wrinkle them. Guess how many of those we have...

I definitely think that all baggage allowances should include a large tortoise (because a turtle would get your stuff wet).

I am intrigued by your squashable bags. They'd be ideal in a small case, because you'd still be well under the weight allowance.

*facepalm* Of course, it would be a tortoise. A great-grandpappy tortoise with grandkids to help encourage him if he falls asleep.

Here is an example of a squashable bag.

I like the grandkids. They could even self-stack to take up less floorspace!

I've seen squashable bags at Boots, actually. I didn't look at the prices since I already have some, but they were definitely available.

I think they must be these. I'm tempted by some for winter, for things like jumpers - there's a limited to how much air gets trapped in silk dress.
