Has anyone got any recommendations for a European ski resort suitable for a complete beginner (me) who wants a good ski school not run by sadistic Frenchmen that will build confidence rather than destroy it (can I really, really stress that my idea of hell is a ski school run by pitiless Frenchmen and keen Dutch women), and a ski area with interesting options for said beginner, a couple of intermediates, and one very good person indeed? Cross-country trails would be nice, but are not essential.

As you may have guessed, I am not overkeen on France. I suspect that no-one else will want Scandinavia. Suggestions would be very welcome!

(I have decided that my cross-country skiing needs to be boosted by a bit of downhill so that I can get used to the idea that going fast - and falling over whilst going fast - is not actually scary, and am looking at going somewhere with my sister and friends. I tried to persuade my father to come, but he's just done his knee in running/painting the garage door.)
