I am entirely unsurprised that Habitat has gone into administration. Some of their things are good – lighting remains a highlight, as does general tableware – but an awful lot of it is dull and over-priced. Or indeed non-existent. It was my first port-of-call for a straightforward wall mirror last weekend: they offered one for over £100 that was a foot too short, or another for £250. I went to Argos instead. It’s not surprise that the lower end of the “design for the masses” market has been hoovered up by Ikea, and the higher by an expanding John Lewis. You can't trade on a name and pasta jars forever.
